SHEFFIELD FC AND SHEFFIELD DISTRICT L
04 February 2009
Two venerable Sheffield institutions have announced a partnership to celebrate their illustrious founder and other links between them.
It was in 1857 that local solicitor Nathaniel Creswick made history by founding, along with his friend William Prest, the world's first football club, Sheffield FC.
In 1875, Nathaniel was at it again. As one of the co-founders of Sheffield District Law Society, he laid the groundwork for over a century of support for the region's legal profession. Originally practising from 9 East Parade (now occupied by local solicitors Norrie Waite & Slater), his firm became Russell & Creswick and is now part of HLW Commercial Lawyers.
His friend and fellow solicitor, Charles Clegg, was also a co-founder of the Society and became its President in 1900. Clegg (later Sir Charles) was involved with Sheffield FC in its early years and went on to have spells as President of both Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United, as well as becoming the long-standing President and Chairman of the Football Association of England and Wales.
Now Sheffield FC and Sheffield District Law Society are joining forces to celebrate the links between the city's sporting and legal professions. A charity game is planned for the spring between the Club and members of the legal profession and the Club and the Society are looking at ways of working together for the joint benefit of their members.
Richard Tims, Chairman of Sheffield FC, said “Sheffield FC is honoured to have formed a partnership with such a long standing, respected and prestigious organisation such as the Law Society, the profession of one of the founders of our unique club. We look forward to working together on joint marketing initiatives in the future”.
Paul Clarke, Vice-President of Sheffield District Law Society, said: "As Sheffielders, we're proud that the beautiful game was born in Sheffield; as lawyers, we're proud of the role our profession played in its development. In an increasingly global business, Sheffield FC is a shining example of what we can all do at a local level. At Sheffield Law Society, we're doing all we can to support our members and our community at a difficult time for many. We're looking forward to working with Richard and Sheffield FC to build on the aspirations and ideals of Nathaniel Creswick and his fellow pioneers". |
