Society raises £3,015 for the flood
29 February 2008
Sheffield District Law Society have been busy raising funds for their nominated charity, South Yorkshire Community Foundation (SYCF) with all proceeds going to the Flood Disaster Relief Fund. So far their events have raised £3,015 to help the victims of the June floods.
Law firms and businesses from around the district gathered at the famous Lindrick Golf Course in September to take part in the Society’s Annual Charity Golf Day. A total of 10 teams took part in the competition organised by the President of the Law Society, Donald Coutts-Wood who was also then Vice Captain at the golf club. He has since taken over as Captain. The winner of the day was Atteys Solicitors with Paradise Chambers and Bank House Chambers taking second and third place respectively. However the real winner was SYCF who received their first cheque for £950!
The second fundraising event was the Law Society Dinner, held in the historical Cutlers’ Hall on 1st February and raised a huge £2,065 from attendees who were keen to donate to the worthy cause.
Donald Coutts-Wood said: ‘I decided to choose the South Yorkshire Flood Disaster Relief Fund, managed by the Community Foundation, as my chosen charity in my presidential year because I have seen first hand the effects that this disaster has had on the lives of the people in South Yorkshire.’
He continued: ‘As Assistant Deputy Coroner in Sheffield I was assigned to open the inquests of the two victims who sadly lost their lives during this tragic event on the 25th June 2007, and I also saw first hand the devastation in Sheffield and Doncaster.’
Jonathan Hunt, Chairman of the Community Foundation accepted the cheque for £3,015 from the Law Society. He said: ‘The flood team are still receiving requests for funding so we are grateful that the donations are still coming in so that we can continue to help those who are still trying to rebuild their lives after the disaster.’
