The general election is a mere three weeks away. The citizens of our country will vote for a new legislative house and effectively for a new government and Prime Minister. As solicitors and lawyers working in the law is a privilege, an obligation and on occasions a challenge. We have a particular interest in the rule of law and access to justice.
The National Law Society has launched a “vision for law and justice” pointing out that the legal sector underpins the UK economy, that our laws enable global commerce, and is worth more than £25 billion to the UK economy. We need to remind candidates and in due course newly elected MPs of their duty to the people and to the law. You can find out more about the Law Society’s initiative here: https://www.lawsociety.org.uk/news/press-releases/law-society-launches-vision-for-law-and-justice/
Locally our president, Charles Neal, will be writing to candidates in the region. Members and others are encouraged to contact their local candidates in a similar way. One way or another we are, as a country, moving into a new era and we need to ensure that the new government whatever its make up understands and commits to the Rule of Law and the protection of individual rights.
