About the Law Library

The Sheffield Law Library was founded in 1875 and reflected the importance attached to the encouragement and development of legal education by the newly formed local Law Society.  The Library has occupied its present premises in the heart of the legal quarter since 1929, when, as a result of the initiative and ambition of the local profession at that time, the Society's prestigious new building on Campo Lane was opened.

The Library Service is available to all members of the Society and their staff and to local barristers on payment of an annual subscription.  The service is financed solely from funds raised by the Society with the aim of providing an up-to-date resource of value to all members of the Society.  The Library collection covers all the main areas of English law of interest to a modern-day legal practice with in depth coverage of a number of  'core' subjects.

The Library's holdings include a comprehensive range of statutory materials dating from c.1850 to the present, full sets of the major series of law reports from the 19th century to date and a wide range of precedent material.

The services offered by the Law Library are constantly under review and we aim to respond positively and quickly to the views of our members.  The Librarian welcomes members comments and suggestions for new purchases.
